works for hire
Definition
A work for hire is creative content that someone produces while working for you, where your business automatically owns the copyright instead of the person who created it. This applies to work made by your employees as part of their job, or to certain types of freelance work when you have a written agreement specifically stating it is a work for hire.
Example
If you hire a graphic designer as a full-time employee and they create your company logo at work, your business owns that logo outright and the designer has no claim to it.
Watch Out
If you use a freelancer instead of an employee, copyright ownership does NOT automatically transfer to you, so you must get a signed written agreement calling it a work for hire before the project begins.
