Definition
A VPN is a technology tool that creates a secure, encrypted tunnel for your internet traffic, hiding your online activity from outsiders like hackers, internet providers, or anyone else on the same network. Businesses use VPNs to let employees safely access company files and systems from home or public Wi-Fi without risking a data breach.
Example
If your employee works from a coffee shop and logs into your company's accounting software through a VPN, their connection is scrambled so no one else in that café can intercept your financial data.
Watch Out
Using a VPN does not make your business fully secure on its own, and some data privacy laws still require you to take additional steps to protect customer information regardless of whether you use one.
