Definition
A valid order is a command or directive issued by a court or government authority that has legal force and must be followed. It meets all the technical and procedural requirements to be officially recognized and enforceable under the law. If an order is not valid, the person receiving it may have grounds to challenge or ignore it without facing legal consequences.
Example
If a court sends you a valid order to produce business records by a certain date, you are legally required to comply or face penalties. An order that was issued by a court without proper jurisdiction over your case, on the other hand, would not be a valid order.
Watch Out
Never ignore any document that looks like a court order, even if you suspect it may not be valid, because you should always have an attorney review it before deciding how to respond.
