trademarks
Definition
A trademark is a word, logo, slogan, or symbol that identifies your business and sets your products or services apart from competitors. Registering a trademark gives you the legal right to be the only business in your industry using that name or logo across the country. Think of it as legally owning your brand identity so nobody else can copy or imitate it.
Example
If you build a popular hot sauce brand called 'Dragon Fire' and register the trademark, you can take legal action against another company that tries to sell hot sauce under the same name.
Watch Out
Just because you register your business name with your state does not automatically give you trademark protection, so you need to register separately with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to get full legal coverage.
