title and interest

Definition

Title and interest describes everything a person legally owns and has a right to regarding a specific piece of property or asset. Title means you are the official recorded owner, while interest means you have some financial or legal stake in that property, even if you do not own it outright. Together, the phrase covers the full bundle of ownership rights a person holds.

Example

When you sell your business building, you sign over your title and interest to the buyer, transferring both your official ownership and any financial claims you had in that property.

Watch Out

If multiple people share title and interest in a property, you cannot sell or make major decisions about that asset without getting all co-owners to agree and sign off.
