suspension

Definition

A suspension is a temporary stop or pause placed on a right, privilege, license, or business activity, meaning it is not permanently taken away but cannot be used during a specific period. A government agency, court, or licensing board typically issues a suspension after finding a violation of rules or regulations.

Example

If your restaurant fails a health inspection, the health department might suspend your operating license for 30 days until you fix the violations and pass a re-inspection.

Watch Out

A suspension has a deadline attached to it, so ignoring it and continuing to operate anyway can turn a temporary problem into a permanent one with much harsher penalties.
