Definition
A statement of work is a written document attached to a contract that spells out exactly what a contractor or vendor will do for you, by when, and for how much. Think of it as the detailed instruction manual for a business agreement, covering the specific tasks, deadlines, and deliverables that both parties are agreeing to. Having this document prevents the frustrating situation where you thought you were getting one thing and the other party thought they were delivering something completely different.
Example
If you hire a web designer to build your company website, the statement of work would specify that they will create ten pages, include a contact form, deliver a first draft by March 1st, and complete revisions within two weeks of your feedback.
Watch Out
A vague statement of work is almost as bad as having no contract at all, so push for specific, measurable details rather than broad descriptions like 'build a website' or 'provide marketing services.'
