Standees refers to people who must stand because all the seats are taken, which comes up in legal contexts around venue capacity limits, ticket sales, and safety regulations. Businesses like concert halls, theaters, or sports venues sometimes sell standing-room-only spots as a separate ticket category. Local fire codes and safety laws strictly govern how many standees a venue can legally accommodate at one time.
Example
A music club sells 200 seated tickets and then offers an additional 50 standing-room tickets to people willing to watch the show on their feet near the back of the venue. The fire marshal sets the maximum number of standees allowed, and exceeding that number can result in fines or forced shutdown of the event.
Watch Out
If your business hosts events and sells standing-room tickets, you must verify your local occupancy permit specifically authorizes standees because your seated capacity limit and your total occupancy limit are often two very different numbers.
