Definition
A Statement of Work (SOW) is a contract document that spells out exactly what work a vendor or contractor will do for you, and SOW expiration simply means the date when that agreed-upon work agreement officially ends. Once that date passes, neither party is obligated to continue performing under the original terms, and any ongoing work would need a new or renewed agreement.
Example
You hire a marketing agency under a SOW that runs from January through June, and when June 30th arrives, the SOW expires and the agency is no longer contractually required to run your ad campaigns.
Watch Out
If your project is still unfinished when the SOW expires, you may lose legal protections and price guarantees unless you renew or extend the agreement before that deadline.
