signature

Definition

A signature is your personal mark or name written on a document to show that you agree to its contents and intend to be bound by it. Courts treat your signature as proof that you reviewed and accepted whatever the document says, so it carries real legal weight.

Example

When you sign a lease for your shop space, that signature tells the landlord and any future court that you read the terms and agreed to pay rent for the full period.

Watch Out

Electronic signatures, initials, and even a typed name on an email can count as a legal signature in many situations, so be careful about what you put your name on even informally.
