severity 1
Definition
Severity 1 is a classification used in contracts and service agreements to describe the most critical level of a problem or system failure, one that completely stops business operations and demands immediate attention. Companies use this label to trigger the fastest possible response time from a vendor or service provider, often requiring them to begin working on a fix within minutes or hours rather than days.
Example
If your e-commerce website goes completely offline during a holiday sale, that outage would likely qualify as a Severity 1 incident under your hosting contract, forcing your provider to have engineers working on it around the clock until it is resolved.
Watch Out
Before signing any service agreement, make sure the contract spells out exactly what qualifies as a Severity 1 issue and what specific response and resolution times the vendor is legally required to meet.
