service marks
Definition
A service mark is like a trademark, but instead of protecting a product, it protects the name, logo, or slogan that identifies a business that sells services rather than physical goods. Think of it as your brand's legal shield when what you're selling is something you do for people, not something they can hold in their hands. Registering a service mark gives you the exclusive right to use that brand identity in your industry across the country.
Example
If you run a cleaning company called "Sparkle Squad" with a distinctive logo, you could register that name and logo as a service mark so no other cleaning business could use it and confuse your customers.
Watch Out
Many people use the word "trademark" loosely to cover both products and services, but legally they are different registrations, so make sure you apply for the right one when protecting your brand.
