security mechanisms
Definition
Security mechanisms are the tools, processes, and legal protections a lender or creditor puts in place to make sure they can get their money back if a borrower fails to repay a debt. These can include things like requiring a borrower to pledge property, equipment, or other assets as collateral that the lender can seize if payments stop. Essentially, they are the safety nets built into a financial agreement to reduce the lender's risk.
Example
When you take out a small business loan and the bank requires you to pledge your commercial van as collateral, that pledge is one of the security mechanisms protecting the bank's investment. If you stop making payments, the bank has the legal right to take that van and sell it to recover what you owe.
Watch Out
Before signing any agreement that includes security mechanisms, make sure you fully understand which of your assets are at risk, because losing key equipment or property could shut your business down entirely.
