scope of work

Definition

A scope of work is a written description in a contract that spells out exactly what tasks, deliverables, and responsibilities each party has agreed to. Think of it as the rulebook that defines where one person's job ends and the other's begins.

Example

If you hire a web designer, the scope of work might specify that they will build five pages, integrate a contact form, and deliver the finished site by March 1st, but will not write any of the content for you.

Watch Out

A vague scope of work is one of the most common reasons business disputes happen, so the more specific and detailed you make it, the better protected you are if a disagreement arises.
