Definition
Scope refers to the boundaries of what a contract, agreement, or job actually covers. It defines exactly what work gets done, what services get provided, or what rights get granted, so everyone knows what falls inside the deal and what falls outside of it. Think of it as drawing a fence around the agreement so there is no confusion about where the responsibilities begin and end.
Example
If you hire a web designer and the contract scope says they will build five pages, you cannot ask them to add a sixth page without renegotiating the price and terms. That extra page sits outside the original scope.
Watch Out
Vague scope language is one of the most common reasons small business owners end up in costly disputes, so always make sure your contracts spell out exactly what is and is not included in as much detail as possible.
