Definition
Royalty-free means you pay once for the right to use something, like a photo, song, or piece of software, and then you can keep using it without owing ongoing fees each time you use it. The term is a bit misleading because it does not mean the content is free, it just means you are free from paying recurring royalties after that initial purchase.
Example
You buy a royalty-free stock photo for $15, and then you can use that image on your website, in your brochures, and in your ads for years without paying anything extra.
Watch Out
Always read the license carefully because royalty-free does not mean unlimited use, and many licenses restrict how many times you can use something, whether you can use it commercially, or whether you can modify it.
