product placement

Definition

Product placement is a paid marketing arrangement where a business pays to have its product or brand featured within media content like TV shows, movies, video games, or online videos. The company pays the content creator or network for the exposure, and the product appears naturally within the story or setting rather than in a traditional advertisement.

Example

A coffee shop owner pays a popular YouTube cooking channel to use their branded mugs throughout every episode, getting their logo in front of thousands of viewers without running a separate commercial.

Watch Out

The FTC requires that product placement arrangements be clearly disclosed to audiences, so make sure any deal you sign includes language about how and when the content creator will disclose your paid relationship.
