A privacy policy is a public document on your website or app that tells customers exactly what personal information you collect from them, how you use it, and who you share it with. Most states and countries legally require you to have one if you collect any data at all, including something as simple as email addresses or website cookies.
Example
If your online store collects customer names, email addresses, and payment information at checkout, your privacy policy must clearly explain that you collect this data, that you use it to process orders, and whether you share it with a shipping company or email marketing service.
Watch Out
Copying someone else's privacy policy without customizing it to match your actual data practices can get you into serious legal trouble, because your policy must accurately describe what your specific business actually does.
