Preproduction samples are physical prototypes or test versions of a product that a manufacturer creates before launching full-scale production. These samples let you inspect the actual materials, dimensions, colors, and quality of a product to confirm it matches exactly what you ordered.
Example
If you hire a factory to make custom tote bags for your shop, they would send you a preproduction sample so you can approve the stitching, fabric weight, and logo placement before they manufacture 5,000 units.
Watch Out
Always get your approval rights over preproduction samples written into your contract, because without that clause the manufacturer can start mass production without your sign-off and you could be stuck paying for thousands of defective or wrong products.
