Definition
A postponement is an official delay that pushes a scheduled legal proceeding, deadline, or action to a later date. Courts, contracts, and government agencies all use this term when something that was supposed to happen on a specific date gets moved forward in time.
Example
If your court hearing is scheduled for March 1st but your lawyer needs more time to prepare, a judge might grant a postponement and reschedule the hearing for April 15th instead.
Watch Out
