Definition
Permanent deletion means completely and irreversibly destroying data or records so that no one can ever recover or access them again. Unlike moving a file to the trash on your computer, permanent deletion involves overwriting or destroying the data at a technical level so it cannot be restored through any means.
Example
If a customer asks you to permanently delete their personal information under a privacy law, you cannot simply remove them from your active database but must ensure their data is wiped from your backups and archives as well.
Watch Out
Many businesses think hitting delete is enough, but courts and regulators may require you to prove the data is truly unrecoverable, so you should document exactly how and when you destroyed it.
