patent applications

Definition

A patent application is a formal request you submit to the government asking for the exclusive right to make, sell, or use your invention for a limited period of time. You file this document with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and it describes your invention in detail so the government can decide whether it qualifies for legal protection. Until the patent is approved, your invention is considered 'patent pending,' which gives you some protection while the review process plays out.

Example

If you invented a new type of coffee lid that prevents spills in a unique way, you would file a patent application describing exactly how it works so no competitor could copy and sell your design while your application is under review.

Watch Out

Patent applications have strict deadlines and technical requirements, so missing a filing window or describing your invention incorrectly can permanently cost you your rights to protect it.
