overpayment
Definition
An overpayment happens when you pay more money than you actually owe for something, whether that is taxes, a vendor invoice, or a government benefit. The party who received the extra money typically has a legal obligation to return it, and you have the right to demand that money back.
Example
You accidentally send a supplier a check for $5,000 when the invoice was only for $500, and that $4,500 difference is considered an overpayment that the supplier must refund to you.
Watch Out
Keep records of every payment you make because proving an overpayment occurred is much harder without clear documentation showing what you owed versus what you actually paid.
