Definition
Open source software is computer code that anyone can freely view, use, modify, and share under specific license terms. The creators have made the underlying instructions publicly available, which means developers around the world can improve it, fix bugs, and build new tools on top of it. Popular examples include the WordPress platform, the Linux operating system, and the Python programming language.
Example
If your developer builds your website using WordPress or incorporates open source code libraries into your app, your business is already using open source software and is bound by the terms of those licenses.
Watch Out
Many open source licenses require that any product you build using their code must also be made publicly available for free, which can seriously affect your ability to sell or protect your own software.
