Object code is the machine-readable version of a software program that computers can actually run, as opposed to the human-readable source code that programmers write. When a developer writes software, they translate their written instructions into this compiled, binary format that only machines can interpret. You cannot easily read or modify object code the way you can read the original programming instructions.
Example
When you license accounting software for your business, you typically receive only the object code, meaning you can run the program but you cannot see or edit the underlying programming that makes it work.
Watch Out
Software licenses that give you only object code mean you are locked into the vendor for any changes or fixes, so negotiate for source code access or escrow arrangements if the software is critical to your business.
