notice
Definition
Notice is the formal act of officially informing someone about something that affects their legal rights or responsibilities. Courts and contracts often require you to give notice in a specific way, like sending a certified letter, within a certain timeframe before you can take action.
Example
If your lease says you must give 30 days written notice before ending a contract, you cannot just stop paying and walk away without first sending that written notification to your landlord.
Watch Out
Missing a notice requirement, even by one day or by sending it the wrong way, can completely invalidate your legal rights in a dispute.
