Definition
A medida cautelar is a temporary court order that freezes a situation in place while a legal dispute gets sorted out, preventing either party from taking actions that could cause irreparable harm before the case is resolved. Think of it as the court hitting a pause button to protect someone's rights until a judge can make a final decision.
Example
If a former business partner starts selling your trademarked products without permission, you could ask a court to issue a medida cautelar ordering them to stop immediately, even before your full lawsuit plays out.
