Licensing requirements are the rules set by government agencies that say you must obtain official permission before you can legally operate your business or offer certain services. Different industries, cities, and states have their own sets of rules, so the licenses you need depend entirely on what you do and where you do it. Getting caught without the right licenses can result in fines, forced closure, or even personal liability.
Example
A food truck owner in Austin might need a city business license, a state food handler's permit, and a health department inspection certificate before serving a single taco. Each of those documents counts as a separate licensing requirement.
