legal remedy

Definition

A legal remedy is what a court can give you to make things right when someone wrongs you in a business or legal dispute. Most often this means money damages, but it can also mean a court order forcing someone to do something or stop doing something.

Example

If a contractor takes your deposit and never shows up to do the work, the legal remedy would likely be a court ordering that contractor to pay you back the money you lost.

Watch Out

Some contracts limit the remedies available to you if something goes wrong, so always read those sections carefully before signing.
