keycards

Definition

Keycards are electronic access cards that control who can enter specific areas of a property or building, and in legal contexts they often come up in lease agreements, employment contracts, and security policies. A business owner is typically responsible for tracking and managing keycards issued to employees, tenants, or vendors. When someone leaves the company or a lease ends, returning or deactivating these cards is usually a formal legal obligation.

Example

If your office lease requires you to return all keycards when you move out, failing to do so could result in deductions from your security deposit to cover the cost of rekeying or reprogramming the entire system.

Watch Out

Make sure your employee agreements specifically require keycard return upon termination, because without that written obligation you may have little legal recourse if a former employee keeps one.
