Definition
Jurisdiction means the authority a court or government has to make legal decisions over a person, business, or situation. Think of it as asking 'which court gets to be in charge here?' because not every court can hear every case, and the answer depends on where you are, where your business operates, and what the dispute is about.
Example
If you run an online store based in Texas but a customer in California sues you, the question of jurisdiction determines whether they can drag you into a California court or whether the case has to be filed closer to home.
Watch Out
Your contracts should always spell out which state's courts will handle any disputes, because without that language, you could end up fighting a lawsuit in a state that is expensive and inconvenient for you.
