Jurisdiction refers to the authority a court has to hear and decide a legal case. It determines which court system gets to handle your dispute based on factors like where you do business, where a contract was signed, or how much money is involved.
Example
If you run a shop in Texas and a California customer sues you, the question of jurisdiction decides whether the case gets heard in a Texas court, a California court, or even a federal court.
Watch Out
Always read the fine print in contracts because many include a jurisdiction clause that forces you to fight any legal battle in a state that may be far from home and costly to deal with.
