irrevocably assigned
Definition
When something has been irrevocably assigned, the original owner has permanently transferred their rights or ownership to someone else with no ability to take it back. Think of it like selling a piece of property outright rather than renting it, except this applies to rights, contracts, or other legal interests. Once the transfer is complete, the original owner loses all control over that thing forever.
Example
A software developer might irrevocably assign the copyright to an app they built to the company that hired them, meaning the developer can never reclaim ownership of that code even if they later regret the decision.
Watch Out
Before you sign anything using this language, make absolutely sure you are comfortable never getting those rights back, because no court will undo an irrevocable assignment simply because you changed your mind.
