Definition
Intellectual property rights are the legal protections that give you ownership over things you create with your mind, like your business name, logo, inventions, written content, or software. These rights let you control how others use your creations and allow you to stop competitors from copying or profiting from your work without permission. Depending on what you create, different types of protection apply, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents.
Example
If you design a unique logo for your bakery and register it as a trademark, intellectual property rights give you the legal power to stop another bakery from using a confusingly similar logo on their storefront or packaging.
Watch Out
Many small business owners assume these rights are automatic, but some protections like trademarks and patents require you to actively register them before you can fully enforce them in court.
