Definition
Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind that the law treats as something you can own, just like physical property. This includes your business name, logo, inventions, written content, and creative works. The law gives you certain rights to control how others use these creations and to stop people from copying or stealing them.
Example
If you design a unique logo for your bakery and register it as a trademark, competitors cannot legally use a similar logo to confuse your customers.
Watch Out
Many small business owners assume they automatically own everything their freelancers or contractors create for them, but without the right written agreement in place, the creator often retains legal ownership of that work.
