injunctive relief

Definition

Injunctive relief is a court order that forces someone to either stop doing something or start doing something, rather than simply paying money damages. A judge grants this type of order when money alone cannot fix the harm being caused, meaning the situation is urgent enough that it needs to stop immediately.

Example

If a former employee breaks their non-compete agreement and starts stealing your customers, you could ask a court for injunctive relief to legally force them to stop before your business suffers permanent damage.

Watch Out

Courts do not hand out injunctions easily, so you need to convince a judge that you will suffer serious, irreversible harm without one, which means you should act quickly and document everything the moment you see a problem.
