Definition
An injunction is a court order that forces someone to either stop doing something or start doing something. A judge can issue one quickly in an emergency or after a full court hearing, and ignoring it can land someone in jail for contempt of court.
Example
If a former employee starts sharing your trade secrets with a competitor, you could ask a court for an injunction ordering that person to stop immediately while your lawsuit plays out.
Watch Out
Getting an injunction can be expensive and requires convincing a judge that you will suffer serious, irreparable harm without one, so talk to an attorney right away if you think you need one.
