government official

Definition

A government official is any person who holds a position of authority within a federal, state, or local government body, whether elected, appointed, or hired into that role. This includes everyone from elected mayors and senators to appointed agency directors and even regular government employees carrying out official duties.

Example

If a city inspector visits your restaurant to check health code compliance, that inspector is a government official acting with legal authority to enforce regulations.

Watch Out

Bribing, threatening, or improperly influencing a government official, even in small ways like offering gifts, can expose you to serious criminal charges.
