A forensic investigation is a formal, structured examination of records, systems, or evidence conducted specifically to uncover facts that may be used in a legal proceeding. Experts gather and analyze information in a very careful, documented way so that their findings hold up in court. This type of investigation can involve financial records, computer data, physical evidence, or any other materials relevant to a dispute or suspected wrongdoing.
Example
If an employee is suspected of stealing money from your business, you might hire a forensic accountant to dig through your financial records and produce a report showing exactly what happened, which could then be used as evidence in a lawsuit or criminal case.
