Definition
Firmware is the permanent software that a manufacturer bakes directly into a hardware device, like a router, printer, or point-of-sale terminal, to control how that device operates at its most basic level. Think of it as the built-in instruction manual that the device reads before it does anything else. Unlike the apps you install yourself, firmware usually comes pre-loaded and requires a special update process to change.
Example
If you buy a smart thermostat for your shop, the firmware is the underlying code the manufacturer installed that makes the thermostat function, and you may need to download periodic firmware updates to fix security vulnerabilities or add new features.
Watch Out
When you sign contracts for devices or equipment, pay close attention to who owns and controls the firmware, because some vendors restrict your ability to update, modify, or replace it, which can lock you into their services or leave your devices exposed to security risks.
