Definition
A facsimile signature is a reproduced copy of someone's handwritten signature, typically created by a stamp, printed image, or electronic means rather than signing by hand. Businesses use these when they need to sign large volumes of documents and it would be impractical for a person to physically sign each one. Many states and industries recognize facsimile signatures as legally valid under specific conditions.
Example
A bank might use a facsimile signature to print the branch manager's signature on thousands of customer account statements each month rather than having her sign every single one.
Watch Out
Some contracts and legal documents specifically require an original handwritten signature, so using a facsimile signature in those situations could make the document unenforceable.
