Definition
A facsimile is an exact copy or reproduction of a document, most commonly sent through a fax machine over a phone line. Many contracts and legal documents still reference facsimile signatures or facsimile copies as legally valid alternatives to original paper documents.
Example
If your supplier sends you a signed contract via fax, that faxed copy is considered a facsimile of the original signed document and may hold up as legally binding depending on your state's laws.
Watch Out
Some contracts specifically require original signatures rather than facsimile copies, so always check whether a faxed or scanned copy will actually satisfy the agreement's requirements.
