Definition
An exhibit is a document or piece of evidence that gets attached to a contract, court filing, or legal agreement to support or add detail to the main document. Lawyers label these attachments with numbers or letters so everyone can easily refer to the same document during a dispute or negotiation. Exhibit 1 simply means it is the first attachment included with the main document.
Example
If you sign a service agreement with a client, Exhibit 1 might be the detailed pricing schedule that the contract refers to throughout its terms.
Watch Out
Whatever you attach as an exhibit becomes a legally binding part of the contract, so read every exhibit just as carefully as you read the main agreement.
