engagement

Definition

An engagement is the formal agreement between a professional service provider, like a lawyer or accountant, and a client to perform a specific scope of work. It defines what services the professional will deliver, under what terms, and for what fee.

Example

When you hire an accountant to file your business taxes, the engagement letter they send you spells out exactly what they will and will not do, so both sides are clear on expectations.

Watch Out

Never assume a professional is working on your behalf without a signed engagement letter, because without one you have no written proof of what was promised or agreed upon.
