Definition
An electronic signature is any digital method you use to show your agreement or approval on a document, whether that's typing your name, clicking an 'I agree' button, or using a service like DocuSign. In most countries and U.S. states, electronic signatures carry the same legal weight as a handwritten signature on paper. The law generally treats them as fully binding as long as both parties intended to sign and agreed to do business electronically.
Example
When you send a client contract through DocuSign and they click to sign it, that electronic signature is just as legally enforceable as if they had signed a paper copy with a pen.
Watch Out
Some specific documents, like wills, certain real estate deeds, and court orders, still legally require a traditional handwritten signature, so always double-check before going fully digital on important paperwork.
