effective date
Definition
The effective date is the specific day a contract, law, or agreement officially kicks in and becomes legally binding on everyone who signed it. Before that date, even if everyone has already signed the document, the terms and obligations do not yet apply to anyone.
Example
You sign a lease on March 15th, but the effective date is April 1st, meaning your rent payments and the landlord's responsibilities do not start until April 1st.
Watch Out
The effective date can be different from the date you actually sign the document, so always check both dates carefully before assuming your rights or obligations have begun.
