Definition
Domicile is the one place that the law considers your true, permanent home, meaning the place you intend to return to no matter where else you might live or work. It differs from your current address because you can temporarily live somewhere without making it your domicile. Courts and tax authorities use domicile to decide which state's laws apply to you and where you owe taxes.
Example
If you grew up in Texas, still own a home there, and plan to return after spending two years working in New York, Texas is likely still your domicile even though you're living in New York right now.
Watch Out
Some states aggressively pursue business owners who claim to have changed their domicile to a lower-tax state, so you need clear, documented evidence that you genuinely made the new state your permanent home.
