A design registration is an official government record that gives you the exclusive right to use a specific visual appearance or aesthetic of a product, such as its shape, pattern, or ornamentation. You apply for this protection through a government agency, and once approved, no one else can legally copy or sell products that look substantially like your registered design. This protection typically lasts between 10 and 25 years depending on the country.
Example
If you design a uniquely shaped water bottle with a distinctive swirling pattern, you could register that design so competitors cannot sell a bottle that looks nearly identical to yours.
Watch Out
Design registration only protects how a product looks, not how it works, so you would need a separate patent if you want to protect a functional invention.
