This Spanish term translates to 'intellectual property rights' in English, which refers to the legal ownership a person or business holds over creations of the mind, such as inventions, brand names, artistic works, and trade secrets. These rights give you the exclusive power to use, sell, or license your creation, and they prevent others from copying or profiting from your work without your permission. Governments grant these protections through patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secret laws.
Example
If you design a unique logo for your bakery and register it as a trademark, your intellectual property rights mean that no other business can legally use that same logo to sell their products. You could also license that logo to a franchise partner and charge them a fee for using it.
Watch Out
Many small business owners forget to formally register their intellectual property, which makes it much harder to enforce your rights if someone steals your logo, product design, or creative work.
