derechos de autor
Definition
Derechos de autor is the Spanish term for copyright, which is the legal protection that automatically belongs to anyone who creates an original work like writing, artwork, music, photos, or software. This protection gives the creator the exclusive right to copy, sell, distribute, or license their work, and it prevents others from using it without permission.
Example
If you hire a graphic designer who speaks Spanish and your contract uses the term derechos de autor, that clause is talking about who owns the copyright to the logo or artwork they create for you.
Watch Out
When you hire freelancers or contractors, copyright ownership does not automatically transfer to you just because you paid for the work, so your contract needs to explicitly state who owns the derechos de autor.
